Morning Keynote: The UDL Real World: My Classroom Experience with Universal Design for Learning
Jon Mundorf, 5th Grade Teacher, UDL Instructor at Harvard Graduate Summer Program
In order to meet the multiple challenges of teaching diverse learners in his inclusive fifth grade classroom Jon utilizes the UDL framework. In this session Jon explained the considerations he takes into account when planning instruction, use of flexible materials for presentation, and the different ways students demonstrate what they know. Jon walked us through some of the technology tools that have allowed his students to be successful, regardless of ability. Jon shared examples of students engaged in the learning process.
Banquet Keynote: Mastery Learning and the Reverse Classroom
Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams shared their exciting story of how they transformed their high school classrooms into centers of learning. In this model, students take responsibility for their learning in and out of the classroom. They watch video podcasts on a number of digital devices, work on assignments, conduct experiments, interact with the class Moodle website, and have one-on-one discussions with their teacher. Students are allowed to work through the content at their own pace while meeting prescribed milestones and benchmarks.
